Vision of Flight’s first event, a “Fly Day” on September 29th, 2012, exposed 12 local, underprivileged students to aviation. The students earned their way to the event by writing a 500-word essay relating to aviation in an essay competition. The winners were shuttled from the Oakridge YMCA to the Air Orlando facility at Orlando Executive Airport. At which, they received two hours of classroom training, experienced flight simulators and, in groups of 4, took a 30-minute flight in a small aircraft.
This event is only the beginning for Vision of Flight, who hope to have many more “Fly Day” events in the future. Vision of Flight aims to provide the future generations with inspiration and mentorship as they pursue careers in aviation.
